Read Chapter 8: The Carpet Beaters using the enclosed text.

Now reread the last paragraph which begins ‘Jim crept forward’ visualising the scene while you read.

Make a list of the words or phrases which helped you picture what was happening (highlighting them if needed). Think about how these word choices help you imagine how Jim is feeling during this section.

Now add some other words and phrases to your list to show what is happening and how Jim is feeling. Some of the words you might have chosen or added can be combined to make a short poem about his Escape.

E.g.:

Escape
Invisible,
Gliding,
Weak and panting,
Darting
Hiding
Breath bursting

Your task is to use your word collection to write a list poems about Jim’s escape. Explore ways to improve the order of the words and phrases listed for effect and to help improve your poem.

Finally, add an illustration to accompany your poem.
