Kingfishers - Year 4

I'd like to welcome all parents, carers and children to the Kingfisher Class Page.
On this page you will find lots of information on what the children have been doing in class and any other relevant information about year 4.
So far, the children have transitioned well and are enjoying their new classroom! We look forward to having a very productive and successful year.
Should you need to contact me, please feel free to speak to me after school or message the office.

Year 4 pupils had a fantastic time exploring scientific concepts through practical investigations on Thursday 12th March.
The children rotated around the key stage throughout the day, working with a different teacher for each experiment. They engaged in four exciting activities:
- Paper aeroplanes – investigating forces and flight
- Material testing – finding the most suitable fabric to make a handkerchief
- Buoyancy experiments – discovering how much weight it takes to sink a boat
- Bird nest building – creating nests using both man-made and natural resources
The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their hands-on learning experience and demonstrated excellent scientific thinking and teamwork throughout the day.

Another Year 4 Forest School Session: Bug Hunt Adventure!
Our Year 4 pupils enjoyed their second forest school session, embarking on an exciting bug hunt that brought the natural world to life. The children demonstrated excellent observation skills and curiosity as they explored their outdoor environment.
What We Discovered
During the session, the children made some fantastic finds, including:
- Centipedes - fast-moving predators with many legs
- Millipedes - slower decomposers that help break down plant material
- Worms - vital for healthy soil
- Woodlouse - important members of the clean-up crew in nature
- Pigeon and robin egg shells - evidence of successful nesting and a great opportunity to discuss bird life cycles
This hands-on experience allowed pupils to:
- Develop their understanding of minibeasts and their habitats
- Practice careful handling and observation of living creatures
- Build respect for wildlife and the natural environment
- Work collaboratively in their bug hunting teams
The children showed great enthusiasm and respect for the creatures they found, carefully returning them to their natural habitats after observation. We're looking forward to our next forest school session where we'll continue to explore and learn from the outdoor classroom.

Our Year 4 children embraced the magic of literature today by dressing up as their favourite book characters. They paired up with Year 6 pupils as reading buddies, sharing their love of stories together. The children also got creative by reviewing books and designing their own imaginative book covers. A special highlight was tuning into a national assembly online. The pupils also took part in a collective reading session and showcased their comprehension skills by answering questions on the text. What a wonderful day celebrating the joy of reading!

Forest School Adventures Begin!
What an exciting start to the second half of spring term! Our pupils have launched into Forest School this week, exploring the great outdoors and learning through hands-on experiences in nature. To celebrate Chinese New Year, they've been busy creating magnificent Chinese dragons using natural materials found in our forest area. From twisting willow branches to decorating with colourful leaves and bark, the children have combined creativity, teamwork, and cultural learning whilst developing their outdoor skills. A wonderful way to connect with nature and celebrate different cultures! 🐉🌳

Celebrating Spring Term Homework Success!
A huge well done to our Year 4 pupils for their fantastic homework efforts this spring term! From creative projects and reading challenges to maths practice and research tasks, the children have shown real dedication and enthusiasm for their learning at home. We've been so impressed by the effort, creativity, and pride they've taken in their work. Thank you to families for your wonderful support in helping our pupils develop independent learning skills and a love of learning beyond the classroom. Keep up the brilliant work!

Year 4 Explore States of Matter
Our Year 4 scientists investigated melting and boiling points through hands-on experiments. They observed how solids turn to liquids (melting) and liquids turn to gases (boiling) at specific temperatures. The pupils discovered that different materials have different melting and boiling points – ice melts at 0°C and water boils at 100°C – and learned that these changes of state are reversible. By heating and cooling various substances, they explored how particles behave differently in solids, liquids, and gases. Real science in action!

Year 4 Get Creative With Rivers!
Our Year 4 pupils explored the fascinating world of rivers in geography today, using recycled materials to build their own river models. From source to mouth, they crafted meanders, waterfalls, and deltas whilst learning how rivers shape our landscape. The pupils discovered how rivers provide vital functions – supplying fresh water, supporting wildlife habitats, enabling transportation, and even generating hydroelectric power. A hands-on way to understand the power and importance of rivers in our world!

On Friday 30th January, Year 4 enjoyed a wonderful Snuggle & Read Day. Children arrived in their cosy pyjamas with their favourite snuggly toy and blanket, ready for a day of literary adventure and relaxation. Throughout the day, the classroom was transformed into a calm reading haven where pupils settled into comfortable spots with their favourite books. It was heartwarming to see our Year 4 readers so engaged and content, enjoying the simple pleasure of getting lost in a good story.

Year 4 Explore the Water Cycle
Year 4 pupils have been learning about the water cycle as part of our Rivers topic in Geography. To bring their learning to life, the children carried out a hands-on experiment by creating a water cycle in a bag. They observed the fascinating changes of state as water transformed through evaporation, condensation and precipitation right before their eyes. This practical investigation helped pupils understand how the water cycle works in nature and deepened their knowledge of the processes that shape our rivers and landscapes. The children were amazed to see the science happening in real-time and made excellent observations throughout the experiment!

Year 4 pupils brought joy and colour to Cheapside CofE Primary School on Monday 19th January as they dressed in their brightest outfits to beat Blue Monday. The day was filled with lots of laughter, music, dancing and activities that made the children happy. We discussed how fresh air and the outdoors can improve our moods, boost physical and mental health and relieve stress and anxiety. We had so much fun throughout the day - the children couldn't stop smiling!

Homework Grid Celebration
Year 4 pupils have demonstrated excellent commitment to their homework this term. The quality and effort shown in their work has been outstanding, with children taking real pride in presenting their learning thoughtfully and thoroughly. I am so proud of what they’ve produced. Well done, Year 4!

Christmas Jumper Day – Wednesday December 17th
Year 4 pupils embraced the festive spirit on Wednesday 17th December by wearing their Christmas jumpers to school. The classroom was filled with colourful designs, from traditional snowflakes and reindeer to more creative interpretations of the season. It was a lovely day filled with excitement and smiles.

Dress up as Historical Figure Day – Friday November 7th
The Year 4 pupils brought history to life on Friday November 7th by dressing up in authentic historical costumes. The children immersed themselves in the period, wearing carefully researched outfits that reflected the clothing styles of their chosen historical figure. It was such an exciting day as the children were so proud to share all the facts they had learned about certain historical events and figures.

Homework
Homework in Year 4, predominantly comprises weekly spellings, times tables, reading and the homework buffet.
Spelling tests will take place every Tuesday and each Tuesday they will come home with their new tests for the following week.
Using the TTRS website, children will be allocated times tables to practise every Friday. Progress will be monitored and questions will be updated regularly.
A ‘buffet’ of activities will be allocated every half term, from which children can choose weekly. These will be creative activities, related to current learning in school. They can be done in any order.
At home, children should be reading, practising their times tables and spellings every day. See the icons below for useful links to support their homework and learning.
Each half term, you will receive our Maths KIRFs for that term. These are Key Instant Recall Facts which children need to be working on consistently across the half term to help support their learning in class.
